VMware: Module Disk Power on Failed

When using VMware you may encounter a “Module Disk Power on Failed” error while starting up a VM which was not properly shut down. It appears accompanied by “The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file” and followed by “Failed to start the virtual machine”.

It usually occurs after a loss of Power and it basically means that the virtual machine failed to clean up after itself. To correct this error and to be able to start the virtual machine do the following.

  • go to the directory where the VM files are stored
  • locate all files and sub-directories with the extension .lck (lock)
  • delete all located files
  • start the virtual machine

The VM should start without problems.
